Kwara PDP Clarifies Professor Abubakar Suleiman’s Political Affiliation Amidst APC Transition

The Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has addressed numerous inquiries regarding the political affiliation of Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman, fondly referred to as 'Amana,' who currently serves as the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

The party clarified his political stance amidst ongoing controversy over the purported resignation of Professor Suleiman and his followers from the party.

In an official statement released on July 25th, 2024, and signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the PDP clarified Professor Suleiman ceased to be a member of the PDP in 2019 following his appointment as Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.

The party emphasized although his appointment was facilitated by the then President of the 8th Senate and PDP leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki (CON), Professor Suleiman publicly announced his withdrawal from active partisan politics in 2019, likely to protect his new office.

PDP further reiterated his non-partisan stance was recently reaffirmed in a public statement by one of his aides, emphasizing Professor Suleiman's apolitical status due to his current official position.

Given the above, the party believes it is erroneous to refer to Professor Suleiman as a chieftain of the PDP in Kwara State, noting he was a beneficiary of the party's leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

Despite being a beneficiary of Dr. Saraki’s leadership, the party explained Professor Suleiman or anyone associated with him has not been compelled to remain in the PDP. It described Senator Saraki, as a liberal democrat who has always respected the personal political decisions of individuals associated with him, including the NILDS DG.

The PDP said Professor Suleiman's political affiliation, whether to the APC or any other party, is a matter for him to explain to those he owes explanations, stating it is confusing for anyone to claim he is defecting from PDP to APC.

The party further disclosed Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki is not involved in any political decision taken by Professor Suleiman or any of his followers, debunking claims that Suleiman and his followers are joining the APC as placeholders for Saraki are baseless and false.

The PDP wished Professor Suleiman and his supporters, including Risikatu Olohunoje, the former Assistant State PRO, who have resigned from their party positions obtained through the 2018 merger agreement, the best in their new political endeavors.

The Kwara State PDP assured the people of Kwara and the general public that the party remains committed to rescuing the state from the current administration's mismanagement, which has caused perpetual hardship since 2019.
