The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it successfully distributed 125,928 out of 184,438 new Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, scheduled for September 21.
This figure, representing 68.3 percent of the total number of new PVCs, marks the highest percentage of PVCs collected in five days since INEC introduced the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process ahead of off-cycle governorship elections in 2015.
In a statement, INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed the achievement and shared plans for the upcoming election.
He noted that INEC will test-run the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the result upload to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal using live voters in select locations within Edo State.
Olumekun also recalled that the PVC distribution began in all 192 wards across Edo State from Thursday, August 22 to Monday, August 26, before moving to the 18 local government area offices. “The commission is pleased to announce the conclusion of the collection at the ward level,” he stated.
He added that INEC had carefully packaged all PVCs by polling units, wards, and local government areas, and also produced a collection register detailing the voters whose cards were ready for collection, which was subsequently uploaded to the INEC website.
The commissioner further mentioned that INEC had contacted the card owners using the addresses provided during registration and that the collection process would resume at the 18 local government area offices in Edo State from Wednesday, August 28, and continue until Sunday, September 8.
The upcoming Edo State governorship election is seen as a significant event, with INEC’s new initiatives aimed at ensuring transparency and efficiency in the electoral process.
