As members of the Association of Distributors and Transporters of Petroleum Products (ADITOP) gather today in Abuja, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged stakeholders in the oil industry to reject ADITOP’s legitimacy.
In a statement released on Thursday, NUPENG President Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale emphasized that ADITOP does not represent the interests of recognized oil and gas associations.
ADITOP scheduled the meeting to discuss pressing issues, including the challenges facing truck owners and oil marketers in Nigeria's downstream sector.
However, NUPENG warned the public and industry players to be cautious of this group, which it accused of seeking to exploit Nigerians following the recent removal of petrol subsidies.
NUPENG reaffirmed that only four associations— the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN)—are recognized by NUPENG as legitimate representatives within the downstream sector. Additionally, NUPENG and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) are the only legally recognized unions for oil and gas workers.
“The general public and government institutions are hereby warned...to be very wary of these individuals who are desperately seeking ways and means to continue to exploit Nigerians,” the statement read.
NUPENG further stated that its Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with NARTO includes provisions for Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), underscoring NARTO’s legitimacy as the umbrella body for transporters in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
The statement concluded by urging government officials and Nigerians to disregard any communications or invitations from ADITOP, affirming NUPENG’s commitment to upholding worker and consumer rights within the industry.
