Former Ivorian Prime Minister Pascal Affi N’Guessan has been selected as the Popular Ivorian Front (FPI) candidate for the 2025 presidential election.
The announcement came at the party’s congress held in Yamoussoukro, where N’Guessan was re-elected president of the FPI with an overwhelming 99.34% of votes from around 4,500 delegates.
The FPI, the party of former President Laurent Gbagbo, has been under N’Guessan's leadership since Gbagbo’s detention at the International Criminal Court in The Hague on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
N’Guessan, who previously ran for the presidency in 2015 and 2020, faced defeat each time against incumbent Alassane Ouattara. Following his rejection of the 2020 election results, N’Guessan was briefly detained, accused of attempting to establish a “parallel government.”
As the FPI’s presidential candidate, N’Guessan has pledged a platform focused on political reform, including abolishing the Senate and reinstating presidential term limits.
His bid arrives amid uncertainty over Ouattara's intentions, as the incumbent leader—who won his last term in a disputed election—has not disclosed whether he will pursue a fourth term.
N’Guessan’s campaign will test his appeal among Ivorians in a changing political landscape, as he seeks to revive the influence of the FPI and deliver on his promises of institutional reform and leadership change.
