Five Kenyan police officers have been arrested for allegedly assisting in the escape of 13 suspects, including a suspected serial killer, from custody.
The officers were released on personal bond after a court hearing at the Milimani Court, where the prosecution had sought to detain them for 14 days to complete their investigation.
Local media reported on Thursday that the officers have been ordered to report to the investigating officer twice a week until the probe is concluded.
The escape has raised concerns across the country, particularly due to the involvement of Jumaisi Khalusha, a suspected serial killer who allegedly confessed to murdering 42 women, including his wife. Khalusha later claimed that the confession had been coerced by the police.
DNA tests have identified six bodies linked to the case, but several body parts remain unidentified. Khalusha had been detained at the Girigiri police station as detectives continued their investigation, with the court granting them seven more days to finalize their inquiries before formally charging him.
The incident has led to disciplinary action against eight officers, including area and station commanders, as well as those on duty during the jailbreak. Kenya's acting Inspector General of Police addressed the media on Tuesday, confirming that the officers involved are facing disciplinary measures.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is offering a cash reward for information on the whereabouts of Khalusha, who remains at large. The escape has heightened public fear and pressure on authorities to swiftly recapture the suspect and ensure justice is served.
