The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the tragic murder of a retired controller of works at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, AbdulRazaq Ajani, who was brutally killed on New Year's Day in Ilorin.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Adetoun Adeyemi, the command expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
"No arrest has been made as of this moment. Our police detectives are working assiduously to unravel this tragic incident," the statement read.
"Meanwhile the Kwara Police Command commensurates with the entire family of the Ajani’s; we pray that God Almighty consoles and comfort members of the family left behind, we pray for the repose of the soul of their beloved father (Ajani Adeyemo) Amen."
"The Kwara Police Command assures the family that those involved in this dastardly act will be made to face the full wrath of the law. Further updates will be communicated as investigation progresses.,"
Ajani was attacked around 3 p.m. on Dele Gege Street, Aderoju area, off Obafemi Awolowo Road in the Tanke area of Ilorin, shortly after returning from a holiday trip to Offa. He was reportedly followed from Offa by his assailants, who brutally murdered him in the presence of his wife and children.
A family member, speaking to the Punch, described the horrific attack, citing CCTV footage that showed four young men, estimated to be between 18 and 22 years old, approaching Ajani’s residence. Two suspects were seen loitering near the gate while two others entered the compound.
"Mr. Ajani, noticing the strangers, rose from the sitting room to meet them at the door. After a brief conversation, they suddenly attacked him. His immediate family members watched in horror as the assailants hacked him with what appeared to be small axes," the source recounted.
Blood stains were reportedly visible on the walls of the home, and the victim’s brain was said to be scattered on the floor due to the brutal attack. Witnesses said the attackers fled the scene before neighbors could respond to the cries of the family.
Ajani, who retired from the Federal Ministry of Works four years ago, had recently taken a contract appointment with the ministry. Neighbors described him as a respected figure, while his wife, who owns the popular Reo Cakes in Ilorin, was also well-regarded.
DSP Adeyemi reiterated the command’s commitment to apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime, promising further updates as investigations continue.
