A retired federal controller of works, AbdulRazaq Ajani, was tragically killed on New Year’s Day in Ilorin, Kwara State, shortly after returning from a holiday trip to Offa. The gruesome attack occurred at about 3 p.m. at his residence on Dele Gege Street, Aderoju area, off Obafemi Awolowo Road in the Tanke area of Ilorin.
Ajani, who had traveled to Offa to spend Christmas and New Year with his family, was reportedly followed back to Ilorin by his assailants. According to a family member, four young men, estimated to be between 18 and 22 years old, entered Ajani’s compound minutes after he and his family arrived home.
Surveillance footage from a CCTV camera revealed two of the attackers loitering outside the gate, with one casually drinking from a plastic bottle, while the other two strolled into the compound. Ajani, upon noticing the strangers from a sitting room on the ground floor of his duplex, reportedly approached them at the main door.
The attackers appeared to engage him in conversation before suddenly assaulting him. The CCTV footage showed Ajani collapsing face down as the assailants brutally attacked him with what appeared to be small axes. His family, including his wife and children, were forced to witness the horrific act.
The attackers fled immediately after completing their gruesome act, leaving Ajani’s family in shock. The sound of their cries eventually drew the attention of neighbors.
A family member recounted the horrifying scene, noting bloodstains on the walls of the home and evidence of severe head trauma suffered by Ajani.
The motive behind the murder remains unclear, and law enforcement authorities are yet to issue an official statement. Residents and family members are calling for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
