Dangote Refinery Threatens to Export Petrol if NNPC, Local Distributors Do Not Patronize It

 

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that it will export its petrol if the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other oil distributors in Nigeria do not purchase its products.

 

This statement was made by Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, during a live appearance on the Brekete Family show on Monday.

 

Edwin revealed that the refinery has been exporting aviation fuel and producing kerosene and diesel. He added that the refinery began producing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, on Sunday, marking the final stage before the production of petrochemicals.

 

He said, “We have been exporting aviation fuel, we have been producing kerosene, we have been producing diesel, but yesterday (on Sunday), we started the production of PMS. So, that was the last stage. The only thing now left out is petrochemicals.”

 

“So, the good news for the country is we have started producing PMS from our refinery since yesterday (Sunday)."

 

However, Edwin expressed concerns about challenges in distributing the refinery's products domestically.

 

He mentioned that certain traders have been blocking the lifting of their products within Nigeria, forcing the refinery to export its petroleum products, including aviation fuel and diesel.

 

“Well, I explained how there has been a kind of a blockade from lifting our products within the country. The traders have been trying to block (it), and so now we have been exporting our petroleum products. PMS, we are ready to pump in as much as possible to the country."

 

“But if the traders or NNPC are not buying the product, obviously, we will end up exporting the PMS as we are doing with the aviation jet and diesel.”
