The Federal Government through the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced plans to launch a comprehensive investigation into the airstrikes that mistakenly hit two villages in Sokoto State on Wednesday morning, resulting in civilian casualties.
According to reports, a fighter jet targeted the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto but inadvertently bombed the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities around 7:00 am. Locals have confirmed that the strike claimed the lives of at least 10 civilians and left many others injured. Additionally, animals were reported killed, and several homes were destroyed by the bomb’s impact.
Residents stated that the fighter jet had been targeting terrorists linked to the Lakurawa group, but the bombs mistakenly landed on innocent civilians in the area. The NAF confirmed that the airstrikes were aimed at locations believed to be associated with the terrorist group.
In a statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for the operation, emphasized that all military actions are carried out based on extensive intelligence and reconnaissance efforts designed to ensure precision and minimize civilian harm.
“These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions,” the statement read.
Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, the NAF spokesperson, assured that despite the claims of civilian casualties, the airstrikes were executed following credible intelligence from multiple sources, supported by aerial surveillance. He further confirmed that the NAF would thoroughly investigate the reports of civilian harm and provide updates accordingly.
