The Kwara State Government has expressed its unwavering commitment to promoting legal and sustainable mining activities, assuring both local and international investors of a conducive environment for investment. This pledge was made by the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Alabi Afeez Abolore, during a strategic sensitization programme held in Ilorin on Wednesday.
The event, themed “Safer Mining Activities and Protection of the Environment,” aimed to raise awareness and promote responsible mining practices among artisanal and small-scale miners in the state. Dr. Abolore emphasized that the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led administration remains dedicated to ensuring compliance with environmental safety regulations and maintaining security at mining sites.
“Kwara State is recognized as one of Nigeria’s leading solid mineral-producing states, with vast mineral resources. The government is currently in the process of obtaining licenses for five special purpose vehicles to streamline investment opportunities in the mining sector and enhance our internally generated revenue,” Dr. Abolore stated.
The Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), Hajia Fatima Shinkafi, represented by Dr. Martina Ananaba, highlighted the vital role that artisanal and small-scale miners play in both the local and national economy. She explained that the programme was designed to equip miners with essential knowledge on safety protocols and best practices to reduce risks, improve working conditions, and ensure sustainability in mining operations.
“The collaboration between the Kwara State Government, the Miners Association, and other stakeholders reflects a collective commitment to improving artisanal mining practices for the advancement of the sector,” she said.
Engr. Lamidi Maruf, the Federal Mines Officer, addressed safety measures at mining sites, including the use of personal protective equipment, proper ventilation, safe blasting techniques, and regular risk assessments and safety audits. He urged miners to adopt these best practices to safeguard their health and well-being.
Women miners were also represented at the event, with Hajia Maryam Garba commending the SMDF for engaging female miners. She called for more support from the government to improve the operations of women in the mining sector.
The sensitization programme underscores the Kwara State Government’s commitment to fostering a safer, more productive mining environment while harnessing the state's mineral resources to attract investment and drive economic growth.
