Seventy lady golfers from across Nigeria are set to compete in the 9th Ladies Golf Championship, organized by the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) Western Zone.
The prestigious event will take place at the Ilorin Golf Club from August 12 to August 17, 2024, and is sanctioned by the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Mrs. Evelyn Balogun, the Zonal Vice President of LGAN and the Anchor of the Western Zone, announced that the championship will feature golfers competing in two categories: handicap 29-36 and 0-28.
The event will kick off with activities for the caddies, followed by the official commencement of the championship on Wednesday, August 14.
The tournament will include a variety of events, including the promotion of cultural heritage and a visit to the Children Reception Centre (Motherless Babies Home) in Ilorin, where donations will be made.
The opening ceremony will feature a ceremonial tee-off and the hoisting of the flag by the Executive Chairman of the Kwara Sports Commission, Bola Magaji.
The First Lady of Kwara State, Ambassador (Dr) Mrs. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, who serves as the Grand Patron of the event, is also expected to be present, along with General Alabi Isama and the First Lady Captain of Ilorin Golf Club, Hon. Mrs. Sikirat Anako.
Golfers in the 29-36 handicap category will compete on Thursday, while those in the 0-28 handicap category will continue their matches on Friday.
The best 45 golfers in the 0-28 category will have the opportunity to participate in an exhibition match with male golfers.
In his opening address, Jide Allen, the Captain of Ilorin Golf Club, praised the organizers for their efforts and expressed gratitude to the Kwara State Government, the First Lady, and other supporters for their contributions to the championship.
He highlighted the significance of the tournament, noting that the performance of the athletes will be collated and ranked by the World Amateur Golf Ranking, further enhancing the prestige of the event.
