The Gender Unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara State, led by Commandant Dr. Umar JG Mohammed, has made significant strides in combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and protecting vulnerable individuals in the state.
During a press briefing at the state Command headquarters in Ilorin on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Commandant Umar revealed that the Gender Unit has handled 159 cases of GBV over the past year. These cases include 76 incidents of domestic violence, physical assault, and intimidation; 58 cases of abandonment of responsibility; 11 cases of sexual abuse and rape; 12 cases of threats to life; and 2 cases of missing children.
Commandant Umar assured the public that several of these cases are currently in court, and all offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. He emphasized the Corps’ unwavering zero-tolerance policy towards GBV and expressed a continued commitment to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to combat this societal menace.
He also urged the public to support the Corps by providing actionable intelligence to help prevent crime in the state.
ASC 1 Ayoola Michael Shola, the Command's Public Relations Officer, affirmed the Commandant's remarks and reiterated the Corps' dedication to safeguarding the rights and safety of all citizens in Kwara State.
