Strong Security Present, Electoral Officials Arrive Late as Local Government Election Commences in Kwara

The Kwara State Local Government elections commenced on Saturday with a heavy security presence across several polling units, though the late arrival of electoral officials delayed voting in some areas.

In Ifelodun Local Government Area, polling units such as PU 010 (Post Office Idofian 1), PU 005 (Jimba Oja Idofian 1), and PU 013 (Idofian 1) saw early voter turnout, with KWASIEC officials arriving on time. Voting proceeded smoothly as security personnel ensured the process remained peaceful.

However, in Offa Local Government Area, several polling units experienced delays. At PU 006 (Film House), PU 005 (Bele-Ore 1&2), and PU 012 (Open Ground Idi-Ogun), voters arrived as early as 8:00 am but were met with the absence of KWASIEC officials. Despite the delays, security forces were stationed at these locations to maintain order.

The presence of police and other security agencies helped to prevent any potential unrest, even as frustrated voters waited for electoral officials to arrive.

By 10:00 am, KWASIEC officials began to show up at more polling units, allowing voting to start in some delayed areas. The election, which is being closely monitored by party agents and observers, has seen steady voter turnout.

Authorities are hopeful that the late start in some areas will not affect the overall conduct of the election. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to ensuring the security of both voters and officials throughout the day.

The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) assured the public that efforts were being made to address the delays and urged voters to remain patient. The election is expected to continue into the afternoon, with results anticipated in the coming days.
