Flying Eagles Coach Zubairu Open to Including Foreign-Based Players for U-20 AFCON

Head coach of Nigeria's Flying Eagles, Aliyu Zubairu, has announced his openness to include foreign-based players in the squad for the upcoming Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in South Africa early next year.

Following the team’s recent victory at the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Lome, Togo, Zubairu emphasized his commitment to strengthening the squad by selecting top talents from both local and international leagues. 

While the team that clinched the WAFU title was composed solely of home-based players, the coach expressed that he sees value in expanding the talent pool to include foreign-based players for the AFCON tournament.

"We will not hinder their participation and are committed to selecting those with the necessary skills,” Zubairu stated during a recent meeting with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter, in Ilorin.

The coach’s willingness to include players based abroad has sparked optimism among fans, with many seeing it as a move to fortify the squad with a blend of local and international experience. 

The Africa U-20 Cup of Nations will serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, adding further significance to Zubairu's inclusive approach in selecting the best players to represent Nigeria on the continental stage.

The Flying Eagles’ preparation for AFCON will focus on refining their winning formula, with Zubairu keen to evaluate and integrate players who can add depth and versatility to the squad.
