The Federal Government through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially transferred the regulatory oversight of the electricity sector to the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).
This decision comes just two weeks after Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law.
Under this new arrangement, LASERC now holds the authority to regulate the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity within Lagos State, a significant shift enabled by the provisions of the amended Electricity Act 2023.
In a statement issued on the development, NERC confirmed that Lagos State had met all the necessary legal requirements outlined in the Electricity Act.
The state government formally notified NERC and requested the transfer of regulatory oversight for the intrastate electricity market in Lagos. This request has now been granted, marking a significant step toward decentralizing the country’s electricity regulatory framework.
The transfer of power aligns with the broader constitutional reforms in Nigeria, which empower states to establish and regulate their own intrastate electricity markets.
NERC emphasized that Lagos State’s compliance with the legal conditions has facilitated this transfer, ensuring that LASERC is now responsible for the region’s electricity regulation.
This move is seen as a milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to decentralize its power sector, allowing for more localized control and potentially improving the efficiency and quality of electricity services in Lagos.
