Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe has called on the Federal Government to rename INEC headquarters after Professor Humphrey Nwosu, a former National Electoral Commissioner, NEC from 1989 to 1999.
Professor Humphrey Nwosu courageously defended the electoral process of the 1993 Presidential Election that produced the late MKO Abiola as the president of Nigeria on June 12.
However, the election was tempered by the Military government of General Sanni Abacha, who remanded Abiola and his wife in prison.
Speaking during the Senate sitting on Thursday, Senator Abaribe highlighted the heroics of Professor Humphrey Nwosu and prayed to the Federal government to immortalize and award him with national honour.
He said, “The senate knows that the late Humphery Nwosu was the former National Electoral Commissioner, (NEC) from 1989-1999. Note further that Professor Humphery Nwosu supervised the 1993 presidential elections. Aware that his courageous defense of the democratic electoral process during the 1993 elections led to the famous June 12.”
“I resolve that the federal government should immortalize him by naming the present INEC headquarters after him. Further, all the government to posthumously honour him with national honour.”
While raising the motion through order 52 (6), he urged the Senate to accept the plea as several senators from the South East including, Senator Abbah Moru, Senator Ned Nwoko, Senator Adamu Aliru, and others also accepted.
“Mr. President, yesterday the senate came to a conclusion on a motion that I brought, and so am back here with a substantive motion at recession, I so move.”
“Motion on recission order 52 6, a motion to immortalize professor Humphery Nwosu, and this motion is supported by all senators from the southeast including Senator Abbah Moru, Senator Ned Nwoko, Senator Adamu Aliru, and others.”
