Professor Segun Oyeleke Oyewo of the department Of Performing and Film Arts, Faculty Of Arts University Of Ilorin, has called on governments at all levels to establish a theater finishing school to tackle the unemployment rate among the graduates in the sector.
The University of Ilorin Don made the recommendation during the presentation of the institution's 276th Inaugural lecture tagged "Imagine a world without theatre and its realities on the stage and the environments in Nigeria.
Professor Oyweo further highlighted that the finishing school would also serve as a buffer zone between the classroom and the field after graduation from relevant institutions.
Similarly, the University of Ilorin Don also called for the establishment of a performing company. He argued this would complement the academic arm and its tight academic schedule.
While lamenting the current state of morals within the theatre industry, he urged the Professional Theatre Associations and educational institutions to exhibit proper control in the enforcement of moral values beneficial to society.
He further advised the stakeholders to ensure actors and actresses should not sacrifice artistic challenges - to share commercial pecuniary gains.
He suggested that the Professional Theatre Associations should serve as regulatory bodies to address the issue of the liberal arts nature of conventional theatre schools to enhance the employability of theatre arts graduates.
He advised Producers, theatre managers, and artists (managers, actors, and directors) to refine their response-ability to the peculiar public nature of the theatre profession.
Finally, he advocated for the strong commitment of the practitioners, suggesting the signing of a professional oath to foster unity among professional art bodies.
