In a strategic move to address workforce attrition and enhance manpower retention in the health sector, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the implementation of the revised 2024 Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for doctors across the state.
The development was announced by the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Hospital Management Board (KWHMB), Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, during the first quarter inter-ministerial press briefing held Wednesday at the Ministry of Finance conference room in Ilorin.
According to a statement issued by the Press Secretary of the KWHMB, Adamu Usman, Dr. Malik stated that the salary adjustment is part of a broader strategy to combat the ongoing brain drain in the medical sector and attract health professionals back to the state.
"This policy aims to reduce brain drain and encourage our medical personnel to stay and even return to serve the state’s healthcare system," Dr. Malik said, reaffirming the administration's vision to position the board as a leading provider of high-quality secondary healthcare services.
He added that the board is committed to providing equitable, timely, and preventive healthcare through innovation, strategic oversight, and accountability.
Dr. Malik also spoke about the state’s commitment to climate-resilient healthcare delivery.
He noted the integration of renewable energy systems and sustainable water solutions across health facilities, including the installation of solar systems at General Hospital, Offa, and Cottage Hospital, Adewole, as well as in Ajase Ipo, Eruku, Tsaragi, and Isin local government areas.
Highlighting efforts in capacity building, he detailed partnerships with global health agencies such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UNICEF.
These collaborations have yielded significant outcomes, including a two-week intensive training for doctors on Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEMONC), now available in every local government area.
In terms of professional development, the board has secured pharmacy intern training accreditation for six facilities across the three senatorial districts.
Accreditation processes are also ongoing for nurses, laboratory scientists, and other allied health professionals. Partnerships with educational institutions are being strengthened to ensure the steady training of key healthcare workers, including radiographers, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians.
Further boosting the healthcare value chain, the board has launched partnerships with local pharmaceutical manufacturers like Tuyil Pharmaceutical Company Limited and Sam Pharmaceutical Company Limited to support the drug supply system in the state.
Presenting data from the first quarter of 2025, Dr. Malik revealed that 12,041 pregnant women accessed antenatal care, 20,594 patients were treated at general outpatient departments, and 946 surgeries were conducted across secondary health facilities. He added that 1,384 births were recorded, including 131 cesarean sections.
He concluded by commending the state government for its sustained investments in the health sector, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of all residents.
