The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning to residents of the state to desist from dumping refuse into drainages, citing the heightened risk of flooding as the rainy season begins.
During a routine inspection and public sensitization exercise across major streets and communities in Ilorin, the Acting General Manager of the Agency, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho, represented by the Head of the Waste Management Department, Mrs. Tajudeen Fasilat Feyisayo, stressed the importance of environmental hygiene.
In a statement signed by the Agency's Press Secretary, Aliyu Jamiu Amode, the Acting General Manager emphasized that dumping waste in drainage channels obstructs the free flow of water, which can lead to devastating floods that endanger lives and destroy property.
She also advised residents to register with approved waste collectors for proper waste evacuation and to use sanitary waste bins and nylons to reduce environmental pollution.
“When the drainage is blocked, water will always find its way and this could lead to the destruction of lives and properties. We advise residents to register with the registered waste collectors for easy evacuation of wastes. They should also make provision for sanitary waste bins and nylons,” Hajia Folorunsho said.
In addition to addressing improper waste disposal, the KWEPA boss warned homeowners to ensure their buildings are equipped with toilets.
She stated that any building found without toilet facilities will be sealed, as part of efforts to combat open defecation and curb the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
KWEPA urged the public to cooperate with environmental officers and maintain a clean environment to promote a healthier and safer Kwara State.
