Federal Government Reassures Nigerians on Safety of TELA Maize

In response to concerns raised by the Nigerian public regarding the safety of TELA Maize, the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and health of Nigerians.

 

The agency provided reassurance following the approval and release of four transgenic varieties of TELA Maize in Nigeria.

 

TELA Maize, a project initiated in 2019, aims to introduce maize varieties resistant to fall army worm, stem-borers, and drought, addressing significant agricultural challenges in the country.

 

The varieties received environmental release approval from NBMA in October 2021, marking a milestone in the project's progression.

 

Gloria Ogbaki, Head of Information and Public Relations at NBMA, addressed the public's concerns during a statement in Abuja on Monday. She emphasized NBMA's unwavering commitment to transparency, safety, and impartial decision-making regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

 

"The safety and health of Nigerians are of paramount importance to NBMA," Ogbaki stated. "We understand the importance of maize as a staple crop in Nigeria, and we assure the public that rigorous scientific evaluations were conducted before approving TELA maize."

 

She further elaborated on the agency's thorough review process, which included comprehensive scientific assessments to ensure that TELA maize meets stringent safety standards.

 

Ogbaki urged Nigerians to trust in the integrity of NBMA's evaluation procedures and the benefits that TELA maize could bring to local farmers.

 

"We have evaluated TELA maize based on scientific evidence, confirming its safety and potential benefits to agricultural productivity," Ogbaki affirmed.

 

"NBMA remains committed to fostering transparency and addressing public concerns as we continue to oversee the safe use of genetically modified organisms in Nigeria."

 

The reassurance from NBMA comes amidst ongoing discussions and debates surrounding GMOs and their impact on agriculture and public health.
