The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially presented certificates of return to Edo State Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa.
The certificates were issued by INEC’s National Commissioner for Edo State, Rhoda Gumus, on Thursday, five days after Okpebholo and his running mate were declared the winners of the Edo governorship election.
The presentation of certificates of return formally confirms Okpebholo and Idahosa as the next governor and deputy governor of Edo State. Okpebholo, who ran under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), will succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki, who will leave office on November 11, 2024, after completing two terms.
In the tightly contested election, Okpebholo was declared the winner on Sunday by the Returning Officer, Prof. Faruq Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. He secured 291,667 votes, winning in 11 of Edo's 18 local government areas.
His closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,274 votes, taking seven local government areas. Labour Party's candidate, Olumide Akpata, finished third with 22,761 votes.
With the certificates of return now issued, Okpebholo and Idahosa are set to lead Edo State for the next four years.
