The Kwara State High Court has sentenced five suspects involved in the notorious 2018 Offa bank robbery incident to death.
The court, presided over by Justice Haleemah Salman, found the suspects guilty of illegal possession of firearms, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
The tragic event, which occurred in April 2018, resulted in the deaths of over 30 individuals, including police officers, and shook the town of Offa in Kwara State.
The robbers attacked several banks, stealing large sums of money and leaving a trail of destruction.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Salman ruled that the evidence presented by the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the five suspects were guilty of the charges against them.
She stated that the crimes of armed robbery and culpable homicide are punishable by death under Nigerian law.
The sentencing marks a significant step in the long-awaited justice for the victims of one of Nigeria's deadliest bank heists.
