The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has provided an early indication of the resumption date for the 2024/2025 academic session for both returning students and new intakes. The announcement was made on Monday via a post on X.
The institution, which concluded its second-semester examinations for the 2023/2024 academic session in July, revealed that students are expected to resume in October.
The information was shared by Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin in an interview with UNILORIN Bulletin last Thursday, August 29, 2024.
He emphasized that the incoming students will be a combination of those admitted for the 2023/2024 session and those who participated in the recently concluded 2024/2025 Post-UTME exercise.
While explaining the rationale behind merging two sets of applicants into a single academic session, Prof. Omotesho noted that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the subsequent year-long strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had a significant impact. He stated that these events caused the University to fall behind by one academic session.
He also revealed that the proposed October resumption date will be reviewed first by the Committee of Provosts and Deans, in accordance with standard procedures, before being submitted to the Senate for final approval. Once approved by the Senate, the official resumption date will be announced.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor explained that while the Administration initially proposed merging two academic sessions to address the backlog, the 13th Council had recommended running the sessions concurrently. However, logistical challenges have proven that managing two sessions simultaneously is not feasible.
After extensive consultations, Prof. Omotesho announced that the University management has decided to officially cancel the 2023/2024 session. He noted, “Given the logistics involved, the easiest option is to merge the two sessions. This will involve two sets of JAMB candidates, which is better addressed now because if we continue like this, we will keep carrying one set behind.” He added that the decision was aimed at streamlining the University academic calendar, to allow the new session to commence in October and restore the traditional academic cycle, where sessions begin in October and end in July."

Additionally, the University has recently released the list of graduates for the 2023/2024 academic session. The list was made public over the weekend following the completion of the previous academic year.
The announcement provides clarity for students planning their return to campus and those preparing to start their academic journey at Unilorin.
