In a thrilling final at the 2024 National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State, Aisha Abdulraheem of Team Kwara secured the gold medal in the girls' squash singles, defeating Zainab Ishola with a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
Abdulraheem showcased her skills from the start, winning the first set 11-8 and following up with a strong performance in the second set, winning 11-9. Despite losing the third set 11-5 and the fourth set 11-6, Abdulraheem's resilience shone through.
The match, which saw intense and competitive play, was decided in the fifth and final set. After a brief talk break, Abdulraheem returned to the court with renewed determination and emerged victorious in the decisive set.
Aisha, visibly emotional after her hard-fought victory, acknowledged the challenges she faced but promised that more medals are on the way.
Coach Isiaka Magaji noted that while other participants were keen to defeat Team Kwara, he praised his team’s focus and determination, which were key to their success.
"Everybody wants to beat Kwara by all means but we are determined to sustain our pedigree in the game." He added that Team Kwara will stay focused as they prepare for the upcoming doubles event.
Her impressive display of skill and tenacity throughout the match earned her the top spot on the podium. The victory not only highlights Abdulraheem's individual talent but also contributes to Team Kwara's growing medal haul at the ongoing games.
The gold medal win is a significant achievement for Abdulraheem and a proud moment for Team Kwara, as she becomes the champion of the girls' squash singles at NYG2024.
