The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over the increasing reports of extortion and high-handedness by certain officers within the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the IGP’s Conference with Senior Police Officers held in Abuja, Egbetokun addressed Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and heads of various formations, stressing the need for better supervision and control of officers nationwide.
The IGP emphasized the importance of ensuring that officers maintain the highest standards of professional conduct, especially while performing their lawful duties.
He called on senior officers to closely monitor their subordinates to prevent further misconduct.
In response to the rising allegations, IGP Egbetokun directed the IGP X-Squad, the Monitoring Unit, and the Complaint Response Unit (CRU), along with other disciplinary units, to conduct routine checks on police activities across the country.
These units are tasked with ensuring that officers uphold their professional responsibilities and do not abuse their power.
The police boss also issued a stern warning to officers who exploit his name for personal gain, particularly those involved in extorting money from unsuspecting citizens. He vowed to take swift disciplinary action against any officer found guilty of such acts.
The IGP’s remarks come as part of ongoing efforts to reform the police force and improve public trust, with a focus on combating corruption and maintaining integrity within the ranks.
