Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi announced on Friday that he would step down after his party, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), suffered a decisive defeat in the country’s general elections, according to preliminary tallies.
The loss marks a historic shift in Botswana’s political landscape, as the BDP has held power for over five decades.
“I wish to congratulate the opposition on their victory and concede the election,” President Masisi stated during a press conference in Gaborone, acknowledging the will of the people and pledging to support a peaceful transition.
Masisi’s decision to concede came amid early results showing a sweeping victory for the opposition coalition, led by the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).
The UDC’s promise of economic reform, job creation, and expanded social programs resonated with voters, signaling a call for change in the Southern African nation.
