Nigerian artist Fireboy DML has shared new insights into the making of his 2022 hit song “Bandana,” revealing that his YBNL label mate, Asake, recorded his verse on the track while on a tour bus.
Speaking in an interview with Ebro, Fireboy praised Asake’s remarkable talent, energy, and “crazy personality,” acknowledging their deep connection dating back to their days as undergraduates at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife.
Fireboy explained that their record label boss, Olamide, suggested he feature Asake on “Bandana,” a collaboration that became an instant hit.
“We sent it to him, and he recorded that song on his tour bus. It was quick. The energy was insane,” Fireboy shared.
Reflecting on their longstanding friendship, Fireboy highlighted the natural synergy that powered the song. “Asake is someone I’ve known since way back. We went to the same university. He’s a born star,” he said, adding, “We had that synergy from way back in school. We had similar struggles. We went through almost the same journey.”
“Bandana,” which quickly topped charts across Nigeria and beyond, reflects the strong bond and shared journey between the two rising stars, who continue to shape the future of Afrobeats with their unique sound and collaborative spirit.
