Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed grave concerns over Nigeria’s sluggish performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, warning it would be a “disaster” if the team failed to qualify.
The West African giants have yet to secure a win in their World Cup qualifying campaign, leaving fans and experts anxious about their prospects.
Under the management of Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles currently sit second-to-last in Group C with only three points after four matches, a concerning position that raises doubts about their qualification chances.
Speaking on Supersport TV, Oliseh emphasized the significance of the 2026 tournament, especially as the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will feature up to 10 African nations for the first time.
“Africa could be represented by as many as 10 countries at the next World Cup; we’re at risk of not being one of these countries, and it will be a disaster if Nigeria do not qualify,” Oliseh said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s absence from the last World Cup in Qatar, Oliseh shared his disappointment. “I was at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for six weeks working on the FIFA Study Group, and it was painful that Nigeria were not there,” he remarked.
The Super Eagles’ next qualifying match will take place against Rwanda in March 2025, giving the team a crucial opportunity to turn their fortunes around. As Nigeria aims to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup, fans remain hopeful that the team can overcome its recent struggles and reclaim its position on the global stage.
