A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Rafiu Balogun, popularly known as Chief Baloo, has commended the University of Ilorin for recognising 62 individuals for their contributions to society during its Investiture Ceremony for the Award of Excellence, Distinguished Alumni, and UNILORIN Ambassadors.
Chief Baloo was among 50 individuals honoured as UNILORIN Ambassadors, a recognition reserved for alumni who have consistently demonstrated loyalty to the university’s values and positively impacted society.
Speaking to journalists, including Ensurednews, during the ceremony, Chief Baloo expressed gratitude to the university for acknowledging their service to humanity.
“If you don't value service to humanity, how do you give back to society? Giving back is key — whether through mentorship or community support,” he said. “That’s why I support initiatives like the Kuliyan Gari of Ilorin Emirate. We are grateful that the university recognises our humble efforts and believes we have represented humanity well.”
Chief Baloo also emphasized the importance of merit in awards and honours, cautioning against recognising individuals who do not embody integrity or societal impact.
“Some people buy their way to recognition these days. But this ceremony stands out because UNILORIN ensured that honour was given to whom it is truly due. If the recipient lacks integrity, the award becomes meaningless,” he added.
The event further highlighted the university’s commitment to celebrating excellence, community service, and upholding the reputation of the “Better by Far” institution.
